Over-the-Range vs. Countertop Microwaves: Which to Buy
An over-the-range microwave isn’t really a microwave decision. It’s a ventilation decision that happens to come with a microwave attached. Once you see it that way, the choice gets much clearer.

The real question: how is your cooktop vented?
This is where the decision is actually made, and it’s the part showrooms gloss over.
An OTR microwave can vent in one of two ways:
- Ducted (vented outside). Cooking smoke, steam, grease, and combustion byproducts get pushed out of your house through a duct in the wall or roof. This is what a range hood is supposed to do, and an OTR that’s properly ducted does a fair job of it.
- Recirculating (ductless). Air is pulled through a charcoal filter and blown right back into your kitchen. It removes some grease and some odor. It removes essentially none of the steam or heat, and none of the combustion byproducts from a gas cooktop. It is, functionally, an expensive fan.
Most OTR microwaves in American kitchens are recirculating, because ducting is expensive and many homes don’t have it. If yours will be recirculating, be honest with yourself: you are paying $250 to $600, plus installation, for a microwave in an awkward position, and getting almost no real ventilation in return.

The case for an over-the-range microwave
It gives you your counter back. A countertop microwave eats roughly two square feet of the most valuable surface in the house. In a small Houston kitchen, that’s a real cost that you feel every day.
It also gives you a light over the cooktop, a fan (of whatever quality), and a clean, built-in look with no cord snaking across the counter. And if your kitchen has a proper duct to the outside, an OTR is a legitimate two-in-one: real ventilation plus a microwave, for less than a decent range hood alone.
Buy an OTR if: your kitchen already has one (the cutout and vent are there), you have real ducting to the outside, or your counter space is genuinely scarce.
The case for a countertop microwave
It costs a fraction as much. A $120 countertop unit does the exact same job of heating food as a $450 OTR. Microwaves are microwaves. The magnetron doesn’t care where it’s mounted.
It’s also safer and easier to use. An OTR sits above the cooktop, which means you reach up and over hot pots to pull out a bowl of boiling soup. That’s a genuine burn risk, and it’s a bad setup for kids, shorter adults, and anyone with limited shoulder mobility.
It lasts longer, because it isn’t sitting directly in the heat, steam, and grease column of your cooktop. And when it dies, you replace it in four minutes for $120 instead of scheduling an install.
The trade: your counter, and no vent hood.
Buy a countertop unit if: you’re on a budget, your OTR would only recirculate anyway, you have or plan to install a real range hood, or you have counter space (or a shelf, or a microwave cart) to spare.
The setup that’s better than both
If you’re remodeling or you have the option: a real ducted range hood, plus a cheap countertop microwave.
You get proper ventilation from a device designed to do only that (a dedicated hood moves far more air than an OTR, and it’s built lower and wider to actually catch what rises off the pans), and you get a microwave at waist height for $120. Total cost is often similar to a good OTR, and every part of it works better.
The reason people don’t do it is counter space. If that’s the blocker, a microwave shelf, a cart, or a spot in a lower cabinet solves it.
Buying an OTR: what to check
- The vent configuration. OTR microwaves are convertible, they can be set for outside venting (up through the cabinet, or out the back wall) or recirculating. Find out which yours will be before you buy, because it changes the value proposition entirely.

- The cutout width. Nearly all OTRs are 30 inches to match a standard range. Confirm your cabinet opening.
- CFM rating. The fan’s airflow. 300+ CFM is decent for an OTR; a dedicated hood typically does 400 to 600. If it’s recirculating, CFM is close to irrelevant.
- Weight and mounting. An OTR weighs 50 to 90 pounds and hangs off a wall plate anchored to studs plus the cabinet above. It is a two-person job. If the cabinet above is flimsy, address that first.
Buying a countertop: what to check
- Wattage. 900–1,200W cooks properly. Below 800W and everything takes noticeably longer. This is the number that matters most.
- Interior size vs. exterior size. Measure your counter depth, and check that your dinner plate actually fits on the turntable. Many compact microwaves can’t take a full-size plate.
- Where it will live. Leave a few inches of clearance around the vents, and don’t box it into a cabinet that wasn’t designed for it, they need airflow.
