Scratch-and-Dent vs. Refurbished vs. Open-Box: What’s the Difference?

Three labels, three very different appliances, and one very confused shopper. Scratch-and-dent, refurbished, and open-box get used almost interchangeably in ads, which is a shame, because the difference between them is the difference between a brand-new machine and a repaired one. Here’s what each term actually means, what you’re really buying, and how to tell which one is in front of you.

The single question that separates all three: has this appliance ever been used, and has it ever been repaired?

The short answer

Scratch-and-dent: brand new, never used, never repaired. Has a cosmetic blemish. Discounted for how it looks.
Open-box: new, essentially unused, returned to the store with the packaging opened. Discounted for the packaging, not the machine.
Refurbished: previously used or defective, then repaired and retested to working condition. Discounted for its history.

Only one of the three has ever had a fault. Only one of the three has ever run a load. That’s the whole distinction, and it’s worth getting right before you spend money.

Scratch-and-dent: new inside, flawed outside

A scratch-and-dent appliance is a brand-new unit that picked up a cosmetic injury somewhere between the factory and the sales floor, usually in shipping, warehouse handling, or a showroom floor-model life. A dinged corner. A scuffed side panel. A scratch across a door.

What’s true of it: the internals are new and untouched. It has never washed a load, chilled a carton of milk, or been opened by a technician. Its expected lifespan is the same as a full-price unit of the same model, because mechanically it is a full-price unit of the same model.

What you’re accepting: a visible imperfection, and a limited, in-stock-only selection. You don’t get to order a specific model in a specific finish and have it be discounted.

Typical discount: 20–60% off retail, driven almost entirely by how visible the flaw is. A dent on a side panel that will be hidden between cabinets is the best deal in appliance retail. A deep scratch across the front of a refrigerator door in an open-plan kitchen is a much more personal decision.

Open-box: the box was opened, and that’s mostly it

An open-box appliance was sold, taken home or delivered, and returned, often within days, and often for reasons that have nothing to do with the appliance. It didn’t fit the space. The finish didn’t match. The buyer changed their mind. The retailer can no longer sell it as factory-sealed, so it’s discounted.

What’s true of it: it’s typically new or barely used, with new internals and full remaining service life. Frequently it’s in perfect cosmetic condition, too.

What you’re accepting: genuine uncertainty about why it came back. That’s the one real risk, and it’s manageable, but only if you ask directly: was this returned for fit, for looks, or because it didn’t work? A store that inspects and tests its returns will give you a straight answer. Also check the box for missing accessories, hoses, trays, manuals, mounting hardware, since those get lost in returns.

Typical discount: 10–30% off retail. Less than scratch-and-dent, because there’s usually nothing visibly wrong with it.

Refurbished: used or faulty, then fixed

A refurbished appliance had a problem. It was previously owned, or it failed and was returned as defective, and it has since been repaired, tested, and cleaned to working order. That repair may have been done by the manufacturer ("factory refurbished," the higher-quality version) or by a third party or the retailer.

What’s true of it: it works. A properly refurbished appliance has been diagnosed and tested, and the specific fault that took it out of service has been fixed, sometimes to a higher standard than the original.

What you’re accepting: a shorter remaining service life than a new unit, and the quality of the refurbishment itself, which varies enormously. "Factory refurbished" and "refurbished by a guy in a warehouse" are both refurbished. The word tells you almost nothing on its own, so ask who did the work, what was replaced, and what’s covered.

Typical discount: 30–50% off retail.

Which one should you actually buy?

Best overall value: scratch-and-dent, especially if the appliance will be installed between cabinets or in an alcove, which hides the flaw entirely. You get a new machine’s lifespan for a used machine’s discount.
Best if appearance matters: open-box. You give up the deepest discount, but you get a cosmetically clean, mechanically new appliance.
Best if the budget is hard-capped: refurbished or quality-tested used. The lowest entry price, with a shorter runway, which is a perfectly rational trade for a rental unit, a garage backup, or a stopgap.

Labels are marketing. These questions are not:

Has this unit ever been used by a customer?
Has it ever been repaired, and if so, what was replaced?
Where exactly is the cosmetic damage, and will it be visible once installed?
What warranty applies to this specific unit?
What’s the return window if something goes wrong?

Get straight answers to those five and the label on the tag stops mattering.

Frequently asked questions

Is scratch-and-dent the same as refurbished?

No, and it’s the most common mix-up. Scratch-and-dent is a brand-new appliance with cosmetic damage that has never been used or repaired. Refurbished means the appliance was previously used or defective and has since been repaired.

Is open-box better than scratch-and-dent?

It’s cosmetically better and financially worse. Open-box usually looks perfect but discounts less. Scratch-and-dent has a visible flaw but discounts far more, and both have new internals.

Do refurbished appliances last as long as new ones?

Generally no. The unit has already been used, so its remaining service life is shorter than a new appliance’s, even though the specific fault has been repaired. That’s reflected in the price.

Which one has the best warranty?
