How to Make Your Refrigerator Last Longer
A refrigerator should last 12 to 15 years. Plenty do better than that. Plenty die at eight, and when they do, it’s usually not because the manufacturer built a bad machine. It’s because of something the owner did, or, far more often, didn’t do.
Your fridge is the only appliance in your house that never gets a day off. It runs continuously for a decade and a half. Everything below is about making that job easier for it.
The one job that matters most
If you do nothing else on this page, do this:
Clean the condenser coils. Twice a year.
Here’s why it matters more than anything else you can do. A fridge doesn’t make cold, it moves heat, pulling it out of the food compartment and dumping it into your kitchen through the condenser coils. When those coils are wrapped in a blanket of dust, pet hair, and Houston grime, they can’t shed that heat.
So the compressor runs longer. Then longer still. Then more or less constantly. It runs hot, it works hard, and it wears out years early. Dirty coils are the single most common reason a compressor dies before its time, and the compressor is the part that ends the fridge, because at $500–$1,200 it’s rarely worth replacing.
How to do it (ten minutes, $0):
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Find the coils. Usually behind the toe-kick grille at the bottom front (it pops off), or on the back of the unit.
- Vacuum them thoroughly. A crevice tool works; a coil brush works better.
- Vacuum the condenser fan area too.
- Plug it back in.
Do it every six months. Every three if you have pets, pet hair is exactly the right size to mat into coils.
This is genuinely the highest-value ten minutes of home maintenance available to you.
Check the door seal (two minutes)
A leaking door gasket lets warm, humid Houston air seep in continuously. The fridge responds by running more, which is the same problem as dirty coils by a different route.
The dollar bill test: close the door on a dollar bill so half sticks out. Pull it. You should feel real resistance. If it slides out easily, the seal is failing at that spot. Test it in several places around the door.
The fixes, in order:
- Clean the gasket. Warm soapy water. Sticky residue and crumbs stop it sealing, and this fixes it surprisingly often.
- Check the door isn’t sagging. Hinges can be adjusted.
- Replace the gasket if it’s cracked or hardened. $80–$200, and it pays for itself in a compressor you didn’t kill.
A little petroleum jelly on the hinge side of the gasket helps it seal and stops it tearing.
Give it room to breathe
A fridge shoved tight into a cabinet alcove is a fridge trying to dump heat into a box with no ventilation.
Leave clearance: a couple of inches at the back and sides, and an inch or so on top. Check the manual, but the principle is simple, air has to move across those coils.
Also: don’t put it next to the oven or the dishwasher if you can avoid it, and keep it out of direct sunlight. Every extra degree of ambient heat is more work for the compressor.
The Houston garage problem
Half the fridges in Houston have a second life in the garage, and that garage hits 110°F+ in August.
A standard refrigerator is rated for a room in roughly the 55–110°F range. Past that, it’s not just working hard, it may not be able to hold temperature at all, and it will burn through its compressor fast.
If your fridge or freezer is going in the garage, buy a "garage-ready" model. It’s a real specification, not marketing, and it means the unit is engineered for a wider ambient range. Keep it out of direct sun and away from where hot air blows in when the door opens.
Set it right, and don’t overthink it
- Fridge: 37–40°F. Freezer: 0°F. That’s it.
- Colder is not better. Every degree below that is energy spent and wear added for nothing, and it freezes your lettuce.
- Check it with an actual thermometer, in a glass of water, overnight. The dial on the door is a suggestion, not a measurement.
Load it properly
How you fill a fridge affects how hard it works.
- Keep it reasonably full. Cold food and drink is thermal mass; a full fridge holds temperature better and recovers faster after the door opens. If yours is empty, a few jugs of water genuinely help.
- But don’t pack it solid. Air needs to circulate, and blocked vents mean warm spots and a compressor that never catches up.
- Don’t block the vents (usually at the back of the compartment) with big containers.
- Let hot food cool before it goes in. Putting a hot pot straight in makes the whole compartment work to recover.
- Decide what you want before you open the door. Standing there with it open is free heat entering your fridge, and it’s the reason fridges struggle after a holiday.

The habits that quietly kill fridges
- Never cleaning the coils. Said three times because it matters three times.
