“Scratch and dent” is one of the most misunderstood terms in appliance shopping. A lot of people hear it and picture a beat-up, half-broken machine someone else gave up on. The reality is almost the opposite, and once you understand what the term actually describes, the discount stops looking suspicious and starts looking like the obvious move. Here’s what scratch and dent really means, and why it saves you so much money.
The definition: cosmetic damage, not mechanical damage
A scratch-and-dent appliance is a new appliance with a cosmetic imperfection. It has never been owned or used in a home. Internally, it is the same machine as the full-price unit sitting next to it on the showroom floor, same compressor, same motor, same electronics, same manufacturing.
The only difference is a mark on the outside. Sometimes it’s a dent on a side panel. Sometimes it’s a scuff or scratch on the door. Sometimes the appliance itself is flawless and only the shipping carton was damaged.
How appliances become “scratch and dent”
These units aren’t defective, they’re just casualties of logistics and retail. The most common origins:
- Shipping and handling damage. Appliances move through warehouses, trucks, and forklifts. A corner gets clipped, a panel gets dinged.
- Damaged packaging. The box is torn or crushed even though the appliance inside is untouched. Retailers often can’t sell it as “new in box.”
- Floor and display models. Units that sat on a showroom floor and picked up handling marks.
- Returns and cancellations. A customer changes their mind, or an order is refused at the door. Once it leaves the store, it typically can’t be re-sold at full price.
- Installation scuffs. A unit that got marked during a delivery that fell through.
In every one of these cases, the appliance works perfectly. It just can’t be sold as pristine, so it gets discounted.
Why the discount is so large
This is the part that surprises people. The savings on a scratch-and-dent unit have almost nothing to do with the actual value of the damage, and everything to do with retail economics.
Big retailers are built to sell flawless boxes. A dented unit clogs their inventory system, can’t go on the showroom floor at full price, and costs them money every day it sits. Their incentive is to move it quickly at a steep markdown. A dent that would cost nothing to live with, and that you’ll never see once the appliance is installed, can knock 20–60% off the price. You’re being paid, in effect, to accept a blemish the retailer can’t tolerate.
Where the blemish usually is (and why it rarely matters)
Think about how appliances actually sit in a home. A refrigerator goes into an alcove, its sides pressed between cabinets or a wall. A range slides between counters. A washer and dryer sit side by side in a closet. In most installations, the majority of an appliance’s surface area is invisible.
That’s why a dent on a side panel is functionally free. Once installed, no one, including you, will ever see it again. A mark on the front of a door is more visible, and it should carry a bigger discount. Ask where the blemish is, then decide whether it will actually be in your line of sight.
What scratch and dent is not
- It’s not used. A used appliance was previously owned and operated in someone’s home. A scratch-and-dent unit was not. These are two different categories with two different price points.
- It’s not refurbished. Nothing was broken and repaired, there was nothing mechanically wrong to begin with.
- It’s not “as-is with no warranty.” Warranty options are commonly available. Always confirm the coverage before you buy.
- It’s not lower quality. The internal components are identical to the full-price model.

- Is the unit inspected and tested?
- What warranty coverage is available?
- Is delivery, installation, and haul-away available?
